CS2 Chicken Egg and Pet Chickens Guide: Hatch, Feed, Breeds and Variants
September 24, 2026
Short answer: A Chicken Egg can show up in your Weekly Care Package, takes about a week to hatch if you keep it fed, then grows egg → chick → pullet → hen. Adult birds are one of three breeds (Catalana, Silkie, Polish) with 42 colour variants in the game files. Eggs, feed, and the pet itself are untradable. One companion slot per account, not a market item.
This guide covers how to get an egg, how feeding and lifespan work, every growth stage, all known breeds and coats, Photo Booth accessories, and what the chicken actually does in a match.
What are CS2 pets?
Counter-Strike 2's pet system is a cosmetic companion feature. Eggs and feed come from the Weekly Care Package. Map ambient chickens are separate from your pet and can take Zeus x27 damage.
Pets do not change weapons, economy, or competitive advantage. They sit with your agent in menus, grow over time, take photos, and (from pullet onward) can follow you onto maps under limited lobby rules.
Accounts have one pet slot. When a bird retires, the slot frees up for another egg.
The chicken roster
Five pet definitions sit in the game files. One is the egg, one is the chick, and three are adult hens. Stills below are the in-game pedestal models.
Chicken Egg
Egg
Starting item. Has to hatch before it becomes a pet you can show off.
Pet Chick
Chick
Freshly hatched and small. Too young to deploy on maps so it stays in the menus while it grows.
Catalana
Hen
Mediterranean-style adult hen with a single comb and lighter plumage styles.
Silkie
Hen
Fluffy adult hen. Silkies are known for plumage that looks and feels like fur.
Polish
Hen
Adult hen with a crest of feathers on its head.
Each bird is unique to the account that raises it. The game stores a pet seed per bird and derives its colour variant from that seed, so yours may not look exactly like the stills below.
How to get a Chicken Egg in CS2
Chicken Eggs come from the Weekly Care Package on Prime accounts, the same free weekly drop you already claim after your first rank-up of the week.
Key rules:
- The egg is a random Care Package option, not a guaranteed weekly drop.
- If an egg appears and you claim it, it uses both of that week's reward picks. You get the egg instead of the usual two reward items.
- Claimed eggs are untradable (cannot-trade attribute in the item files, shown as untradable in-game).
- You cannot buy a pet chicken on the Steam Market.
Tip: If you already care about weekly skins or cases, weigh the egg carefully. Claiming it skips both other picks for that week.
Hatching: keep the egg fed
An egg takes about one week to hatch. The item carries a hatch date. The HatchBook UI counts down to it.
Hatching is staged like a case opening, with its own animation and sound cues. Until then:
- Check the pet's food / hunger status.
- Claim Chicken Feed from Weekly Care Packages when you need it (feed claims also take both reward picks when selected).
- Do not let the bowl run dry. If food expires before hatch day, the egg will not hatch.
- An egg that is never hatched can expire on its own, with its own notification.
Once the timer ends, the egg cracks and you get a chick.
Growth stages: egg → chick → pullet → hen
CS2's locale files name four stages. Each stage changes the model and unlocks more of what the pet can do.
| Stage | What you see | What unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Egg | Speckled egg on its pedestal | Hatch countdown. Must stay fed |
| Chick | Small yellow chick | Name + Photo Booth. Stays in menus (too young to deploy) |
| Pullet | Young hen. Adult colours coming in | Cleared to deploy with you on maps (host lobby or solo queue) |
| Hen | Full adult breed model | Mature Photo Booth poses. Final life stage |
Every egg starts as the same yellow chick. Breed and coat appear as it matures into a pullet/hen. You can name the pet once at each stage from chick onward, so the name can change as it grows.
The pet book tracks progress. Photos you take stay on your profile even after the bird retires.
Chicken Feed: bag sizes and lifespan
Chicken Feed is the consumable that keeps a pet around. The item description is blunt: feed your pet to keep it around.
Feed bag sizes
Valve ships three SunnySide bag icons by net weight (Steam inventory art):
Where feed comes from
- Weekly Care Packages are the reliable source. Hunger hints point you there directly.
- Feed is not a Steam Market item.
- Claiming feed from a Care Package, like the egg, consumes both weekly picks when you choose it.
Keeping a pet fed
- Every pet carries a food expiration date and a next upgrade date (hunger countdown vs growth schedule).
- The game warns you twice before food runs out (running low, then needs food).
- Plan the next Care Package before the bowl is empty, especially during the hatch week.
When food runs out (or life ends)
- Stop feeding and the pet retires. It leaves the active slot rather than sitting hungry forever.
- A hen also leaves when its lifespan ends, even if it is still fed.
- Separate messages cover "lived a full life" vs "ran out of food."
- Photos remain in the pet book. The slot opens for another egg.
Pets are not permanent. Treat the Care Package calendar as part of raising one.
Every colour variant (42 coats)
Coat names below are the game's own variant labels. Counts are designs found in files, not drop odds. Exact chances per coat are unpublished. Stills are the in-game breed materials.
Total: 42 colour designs across breeds + the default chick (15 Catalana, 13 Silkie, 13 Polish, 1 chick).

Seven additional textures exist in the game files without a material-group assignment, so those coats have no in-game inspect link.
Photo Booth and accessories
The pet book and Photo Booth let you save pictures as the bird grows. Mature poses unlock at the hen stage.
Ten accessory models appear in Photo Booth files. They are Photo Booth / presentation cosmetics for poses and pictures:

Armor Helmet
Alien
Banana

Nose Glasses
Party Hat

Wizard Hat
What the chicken does in a match
- Cosmetic only. No weapons, scouting, damage, or economy effects.
- Chick: menus and loadout presence. Not map-deployable.
- Pullet / hen: can accompany you onto a map when you host the lobby or queue solo. Companion presence only, not a gameplay tool.
- Map ambient chickens (the classic farm birds) are a separate system from your pet inventory item.
CS2 pets FAQ
What are CS2 pets?
Account-bound cosmetic companions. You claim a Chicken Egg from the Weekly Care Package, keep it fed, and raise it through chick, pullet, and hen stages with Photo Booth and naming along the way.
How many CS2 pets are there?
Five pet definitions: Chicken Egg, Pet Chick, Catalana, Silkie, and Polish. Colour variants multiply how each hen can look (42 coats listed above).
Can you trade or sell CS2 pets?
No. Eggs, feed, and the pet are untradable / not marketable. One slot per account.
How do you get Chicken Feed?
From Weekly Care Packages. Hunger prompts point there. Claiming feed uses both weekly picks when you select it.
How long does hatching take?
About a week, if the egg stays fed. Unhatched eggs can expire.
Can I pick my breed or colour?
No. Every hatch starts yellow. Adult breed and coat come from the pet seed as it grows.
What happens when my hen dies / retires?
It leaves the active slot. Photos stay. You can claim another egg when one appears in a future Care Package.
Do pets affect Trust Factor, Premier, or skins?
No competitive or inventory-economy effect. They do not trade up, float, or list on marketplaces.
Does a CS2 pet chicken help in matches?
No. Pets are cosmetic companions. From pullet onward the bird can accompany you on a map when you host the lobby or queue solo, but it gives no combat, scouting, or weapon benefit.
Quick checklist
- Rank up once in the week (Prime) → open Weekly Care Package.
- If Chicken Egg appears and you want it → claim it (costs both picks).
- Keep Chicken Feed on the clock until hatch (~1 week).
- Name + Photo Booth at chick. Watch for pullet colours (Catalana / Silkie / Polish).
- Keep feeding through hen life. Accept retirement when lifespan or hunger ends.
- Enjoy the photos. That is the lasting part of the system.
CS2 pets are a slow, account-bound companion loop built around Care Packages. If you like collecting Valve cosmetics that are not skins, the weekly Care Package choice is egg or the usual two rewards.
